Project 1882 is organising a webinar on 4 June 2026, to raise awareness and encourage engagement on the need for improved fish welfare, both nationally in Sweden and at the EU level.
There is currently significant political interest in supporting fish farming. Efforts are being made to reduce the regulatory burden and increase production. However, animal welfare legislation and improved welfare for fish are not being given the same level of priority. Project 1882 aims to highlight the situation of those who cannot speak for themselves. In this case, we are referring to fish, which are still measured in tonnes rather than as individual animals.
On 4 June, Project 1882 are hosting a webinar to draw attention to these issues and to promote greater engagement in improving fish welfare, both in Sweden and across the EU.
The main speaker of the webinar is Dr Helen Lambert, who will present on the welfare of fish in RAS (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems). RAS farming, i.e. the land-based farming of fish in tanks, is becoming increasingly common and is often marketed as a sustainable alternative to traditional fish farming. However, animal welfare considerations have not received the same level of attention.
Date and time: 4 June, 2.00–3.30 pm (CEST)
