McDonald’s Ukraine announces cage-free commitment

A major step forward for hens in Ukraine: McDonald’s Ukraine has announced that it is now 100% cage-free following discussions with Project 1882. The commitment means that all eggs used across McDonald’s more than 120 restaurants in Ukraine now come from cage-free systems instead of hens confined in cages. It is a significant milestone in a country where around 98% of the egg-laying hens are still kept in cages.

Life in a cage means spending almost every moment trapped in a cramped metal enclosure, unable to express many of their natural behaviors. The hens are prevented from exploring, dustbathing, perching, and moving freely. While cage-free systems are far from perfect, moving hens out of cages eliminates one of the cruelest forms of confinement in animal agriculture.

The decision by McDonald’s Ukraine shows that progress for animals is possible, even in difficult circumstances. It also sends an important signal to the wider food industry: animal welfare cannot be put on hold.

"At a time when many companies are standing still, McDonald's Ukraine is showing real leadership under exceptionally difficult conditions," says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.
"This decision shows that animal welfare and business responsibility can move forward together, even in challenging times. Companies that act now are helping shape the future of Ukraine's food industry."

The announcement comes at a crucial time for Ukraine’s food industry. As the country moves closer to the European Union, there is growing pressure to align with European animal welfare standards. The EU has already prohibited conventional battery cages, and the movement to end the use of cages in animal farming altogether continues to gain momentum. For Ukraine, transitioning away from cages will be an important part of meeting future expectations and improving conditions for farmed animals.

Large international companies have enormous influence over food supply chains. When a company such as McDonald’s takes action, it helps drive change throughout the market and encourages other businesses to follow. McDonald’s commitment also places the company ahead of several other major international brands operating in Ukraine, including KFC and Auchan, which have not yet made public cage-free commitments.

"Cage-free is not the finish line, but it is an important step forward," says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882. He continues:
"McDonald's Ukraine has demonstrated that change is possible. We hope this decision encourages others to take the next step and accelerate the transition toward higher standards across the industry."

Every company that moves away from cages helps reduce suffering for hens. But cage-free systems do not solve all the welfare problems faced by egg-laying hens. Animals are still exploited for food, and many welfare issues remain.

That is why the most effective choice consumers can make for animals is to leave eggs off their plates altogether and choose plant-based alternatives instead.
