In June 2023 the dam at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant in Nova Kakhovka, Ukraine collapsed. The entire area was flooded, and thousands of animals needed immediate rescue and care. Project 1882 funded immediate disaster relief services as well as contributed to the necessary work post the flooding, which resulted in a total of 500 companion animals being rescued.
– We took action as soon as we heard about the incident and began to coordinate the work needed with Ukrainian volunteer groups, as well as helping the animals affected by the disastrous flooding. The teams worked tirelessly around the clock and helped rescue countless animals who without our help, would not have survived, says Hanna Tereshko, Director of Project 1882 Ukraine.
Project 1882 continues to work with disaster relief services as well as supporting Ukrainian volunteer groups working to help animals affected by the war. The organisations’ goal is to supplement this important work by contributing towards the change for the millions of animals that live and die in the country's factory farms. About half a billion fast growing chickens are raised annually in Ukraine, where 99.5 % of hens in the egg industry live their entire lives in cages.
– We are pleased that our unified work has begun, and we will continue our work to assist the evacuation of animals from the front line and the war. While planning and working for a future and for a more animal-friendly Ukraine, concludes Hanna Tereshko.
The desire as well as the need for change is tremendous and Project 1882 is working to support the Ukrainian initiatives that have already commenced.
Help us continue saving animals affected by the terrible war in Ukraine.
