Unilever markets itself with the phrase “make sustainable living commonplace.”, for the millions of hens forced to live in cages, that everyday reality is anything but sustainable. The company once promised to phase out eggs from caged hens across its entire global business, but they abandoned that promise in 2025. Project 1882 urges Unilever, one of the world’s largest food industry companies, to take responsibility and reinstate its promise to the hens.
In 2018, Unilever promised to end the use of cage eggs globally by 2025. After they honored their promise in Europe and North America, the company withdrew its global commitment. This creates a clear inequality between markets and signals that animals are valued differently depending on where in the world they are located.
The hens are the ones paying the price. Hens that are forced to live in cages can’t stretch their legs or wings or even fluff their feathers without hitting the bars or another bird.
Unilever is a global giant with brands such as Hellmann’s and Knorr. The company uses about 1.38 billion eggs a year, the equivalent of nearly 5 000 000 hens, with a large share in countries where the shift away from cages has been slower. When a company this big retreats from its promise, the transition by other companies risks slowing down.
There are no excuses. Over 2,500 companies worldwide have already rejected cages and report openly on their progress. Major manufacturers including Kellanova, General Mills, and Kraft Heinz have global cage‑free policies. Unilever has both the means and the responsibility to do the same.
Project 1882 urges Unilever to reinstate its global promise to phase out eggs from hens in cages and to publish a clear plan for how and when this will happen.
Sign the petition today and demand that Unilever take responsibility across its entire global business, not only in Europe and North America.
