On June 11, a proposed action plan to strengthen the plant-based food sector was presented at an event in the European Parliament. Project 1882 is one of approximately 75 organizations endorsing the initiative.
Project 1882 is one of approximately 75 organizations endorsing a new action plan for plant-based foods, which was presented on June 11. The action plan aims to boost the plant-based food sector in the EU, calling on the EU Commission and member states to implement a range of measures. The goal is to create a sustainable, competitive, and resilient food system by addressing the entire agri-food value chain, from production to consumer availability.
− A holistic approach is required to develop and synchronize all parts of the chain, and I am therefore pleased with the strong support behind this important initiative, says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.
The measures presented in the Action Plan align closely with the views that Project 1882 submitted to the EU Commission earlier this year –
both to the EU Commission regarding the EU's long-term budget, and to the Swedish government concering the next budget period for the EU's Common Agricultural Policy. Historically, the plant-based sector has not been the focus of political measures in the food sector, but that may
now be changing.
− The Swedish government recently announced that they want to see increased production of green proteins in the country, with measurable growth targets. This is a welcome step away from supporting factory farming, says Benny Andersson.
Increase Production and Consumption: Enhance the production and consumption of plant-based foods to address health, biodiversity, climate, and food security challenges.
Support Farmers: Provide targeted support to farmers, especially young and new entrants, to diversify production and benefit from emerging market opportunities.
Boost Demand: Make plant-based foods more accessible and affordable to consumers, ensuring stable market conditions for producers.
Invest in R&D: Focus on research and development to innovate and improve the plant-based food sector.
The document emphasizes the strategic role of plant-based foods in strengthening EU food security and positioning the EU as a global leader in sustainable agri-food systems. The endorsing organizations represent animal welfare, sustainability, environmental protection, consumer rights, and the promotion of plant-based foods.
