Reality of toxicity tests on animals exposed in new footage

Newly released footage shows animals being subjected to distressing toxicity tests – practices that are still allowed under EU regulations. Lab workers are now speaking out about the horrible conditions animals are suffering.

The footage, taken in a UK-based laboratory, shows tests performed for EU-based clients and exposes a harsh reality: several animals, including rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs and non-human primates are restrained and subject to tests that include injections, inhalation, force-feeding, and skin exposure to potentially toxic substances.

The disturbing footage unmasks the immense level of suffering that the animals are forced to endure during these tests, and the fear inflicted as they anticipate these ordeals.

This is horrifying to watch, and completely unacceptable. The suffering these animals endure isn’t an exception – it’s a direct result of the EU’s current rules on chemical testing”, says Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.

These animals are subject to severe suffering: confined in cages and forced to endure extreme tests, which lead to their death. The tests shown in the footage are used for testing pharmaceutical drugs, but some of them can also be required to test industrial chemicals, pesticides or food additives. After the tests, the surviving animals are killed.

The European Commission has pledged to present a roadmap by early 2026 to phase out animal testing in chemical safety assessments. According to Project 1882, achieving this will require concrete action, clear milestones, and long-term investment.

Enough is enough. We must do everything we can to bring this terrible suffering to an end. The animals have no choice. They cannot refuse. But we can”, says Benny Andersson.
