End the suffering caused by animal transport

Right now, the EU has a historic opportunity to strengthen the protection of animals in transport. However, the process is uncertain, and without sufficient support for the animals, we risk ending up with new legislation which, like the current legislation, does not provide the animals with the protection they need

Every year, millions of animals are transported within and from the EU under conditions that cause immense suffering in the form of stress, fear, exhaustion, hunger, thirst, injury and death. These journeys can last for weeks or even months and take place in extreme heat.

Work is currently underway to update the EU’s rules on animal transport. This is a crucial opportunity to demand stricter rules that actually protect animals.

By signing the open letter, you are helping to show MEPs that citizens across Europe want to see stronger animal welfare legislation and an end to these harrowing animal transports.

The reality for animals

The current rules are not sufficient

Animals are sentient beings, but current regulations still permit transport that causes great suffering. Investigations, witness accounts and scientific evidence have long shown that current regulations do not provide animals with adequate protection.

Transport takes place over long periods and in temperatures that pose serious risks to the animals’ health. Conditions are cramped and the environment is frightening. Many animals are sent long distances to countries outside the EU, where the ability to ensure animal welfare is very limited.

What we want to see

EU: tighten the rules!

Project 1882 in Sweden is working to ensure that the new legislation brings about real change for animals. Clear and strict rules are needed that put the animals’ needs first.

We want to see shorter transport times, stronger protection for young and other particularly vulnerable animals, and temperature limits based on the animals’ needs. The legislation must also be strengthened for transport to countries outside the EU.

At the same time, a transition away from the transport of live animals is urgently needed. Instead of transporting live animals to be slaughtered or used for rearing or breeding upon arrival, meat or genetic breeding material can be transported.
