New EU initiative calls for stronger protection of stray dogs and cats
A new European Citizens’ Initiative aims to strengthen the protection of stray dogs and cats, as well as animals living in shelters. The initiative calls on the European Commission to introduce measures that improve animal welfare and reduce suffering for vulnerable animals, both within and outside the EU.
The organisers highlight the need for sterilisation and vaccination programmes, veterinary care, animal registration, and education on animal welfare. They also want EU trade policies, funding, and cooperation with other countries to be more closely linked to animal welfare requirements.
Project 1882 welcomes the initiative and is pleased to see the issue of stray animals and animals living in shelters being addressed at the EU level.
Companion animals should not have to live without protection. It is encouraging that this initiative highlights the need for long-term solutions that prevent suffering and improve the welfare of dogs and cats across Europe.

The European Commission has approved the initiative to begin collecting signatures from EU citizens. If the initiative reaches one million signatures, the Commission will be required to consider the proposals.
