The European Commission appears to be leaning towards stricter regulations rather than an all-out ban on fur farms. A protest was therefore held in Brussels to remind the Commission that a ban is the only right way forward.
Today, the Fur Free Alliance, a global coalition which Project 1882 is a member, organized a protest in Brussels. This was held in response to indications that the European Commission is considering stricter rules for fur farming instead of a comprehensive ban on fur farms and the trade of fur within the EU. The location was chosen with care, with the European Commission's building in the background to direct the message straight to decision-makers.
The EU must be able to resist the fur industry lobby’s disinformation. Today, the European Commission was reminded that the facts are undeniable: this industry will always entail immense suffering for animals. The Commission now needs to listen to the 1.5 million European citizens demanding a comprehensive ban.
- Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882.
More than 50 people wearing matching blue Fur Free Europe vests gathered at lunchtime to participate in the protest. The agenda included information about Fur Free Europe as a European citizens' initiative, the EFSA report on unavoidable welfare problems in fur farms, and details about an official complaint submitted to the European Ombudsman regarding alleged misconduct by the European Commission. As time went on, more engaged people joined in. During the speeches, vehicles displaying LED signs circulated, showcasing messages calling for a ban on fur farms and the fur trade in the EU.
