Newly released images expose systematic animal cruelty in Swedish pig factories. Project 1882 urges the public to choose plant-based this Christmas and support efforts to protect animals.
Today, Project 1882 is publishing new photos and video footage that reveal the reality inside Swedish pig factories. The material shows pigs living in severe misery: cramped pens, hard concrete floors without bedding, filthy conditions, injured animals, and even dead pigs lying among the living. Project 1882 has reported four facilities to the Swedish police on suspicion of animal cruelty, but the issues extend far beyond a few farms. This is a systemic failure.
It is devastating to see the conditions these pigs endure. What makes it even more heartbreaking is knowing that millions of Swedish pigs are confined under the same cruel circumstances. This is the reality in Swedish pig factories. The pigs are born, live, and die in conditions no animal should ever have to face.
– Benny Andersson, CEO of Project 1882
The footage was taken at facilities that have received only one pre-announced animal welfare inspection from authorities in the past ten years, except for one facility, where two such inspections were carried out. Given the number of pigs slaughtered each year, this means an estimated 120,000 pigs have passed through these facilities with virtually no animal-welfare oversight. The rarity of inspections is striking.
This is consistent with official figures showing that only 5.4% of Swedish facilities housing so-called food-producing animals were inspected in 2024.
As Christmas approaches, we have a choice. We can continue to look the other way – or we can act. By choosing a plant-based Christmas and supporting our work for the animals, you can make a meaningful difference. Your contribution helps dismantle factory farming once and for all.
