EU unveils new food policy – a crucial turning point for animals
On 7 July, the European Commission presented two major initiatives: the new “Livestock Strategy” and the “Protein Action Plan”. Together, they set the direction for the future of Europe’s food system – with major implications for animals, the climate and how our food is produced. There is now an indicative timeline for phasing out of cages in the EU including an import ban on cage eggs.
McDonald’s Ukraine announces cage-free commitment
A major step forward for hens in Ukraine: McDonald’s Ukraine has announced that it is now 100% cage-free following discussions with Project 1882. The commitment means that all eggs used across McDonald’s more than 120 restaurants in Ukraine now come from cage-free systems instead of hens confined in cages. It is a significant milestone in a country where around 98% of the egg-laying hens are still kept in cages.
Project 1882 urges CJ Group to go cage-free
Together with animal rights organizations around the world, Project 1882 is calling on CJ Group, one of South Korea’s largest food and beverage companies, to adopt and publish a global cage-free egg policy.
Strong international support for a ban on hen cages in Ukraine
In a letter signed by Project 1882 and twelve other European animal organisations, Ukraine is urged to introduce a ban on keeping hens in cages.
This is what Project 1882 is doing for hens
- Informing the public about the situation of animals and how eggs are produced.
- Conducting extensive work for the last 20 years aimed at corporations to eliminate caged eggs, both in Sweden and worldwide. This work is strategically carried out through the Open Wing Alliance coalition.
- Putting pressure on politicians and authorities to change laws that affect hens, such as through the citizens' initiative End the Cage Age.
- Operating the inspirational website “Välj Vego” (Choose Veg), which aims to make it easier for people to choose alternatives to eggs.
