Denmark to phase out fur farming
The Danish government has announced that the farming of mink for fur production will be phased out by August 2029. Project 1882 welcomes the decision and sees it as an important victory for the animals.
The decision means Denmark will not seek an exemption from the upcoming EU ban, marking another significant step in the decline of the European fur industry.
“This is very welcome news and an important victory for the minks. Raising animals for their fur causes significant suffering, and we hope more countries will follow Denmark’s example and phase out the fur industry once and for all"
– Linn Åkesson, Chief Program Officer, Project 1882
For many years, Project 1882 has worked to end the fur industry and raise awareness of the animal welfare concerns associated with keeping animals for fur production. In Sweden, support for a ban on fur farming has grown among members of parliament. With Denmark’s decision, the number of European countries where minks are still farmed for their fur will decrease.
“This decision shows that the development is moving in the right direction. It is now time for Sweden to follow suit"
– Linn Åkesson
In recent years, several European countries have introduced bans on or phased out fur farming. Denmark now joins the growing list of countries setting an end date for mink farming for fur production.
Ban EU fur farms
If Denmark can do it, so can the EU. It is time for the European Commission to act on a ban on fur farming and imports of fur products.
